How GIF compression works here
- Lossless optimize. -O levels rewrite the GIF structure (frame cropping, transparency packing) without touching pixels.
- Lossy. The slider feeds gifsicle's
--lossyvalue — modest values often halve the file with barely visible change. - Colors. Fewer palette colors = smaller file; 128 is usually safe, 32 gets crunchy.
- Honest results. If the output is bigger than the source, the original is kept and the card says so.
Frequently asked questions
Does GIF compression hurt quality?
Lossless mode only rewrites storage — pixels stay identical. Lossy mode trades color precision for size; the slider controls how far, and the before/after preview shows the difference.
How much smaller can a GIF get?
It depends on the source. Simple animations often shrink 30–70%; long colorful ones may only save 10–30%. The real resulting size and ratio are always shown — never exaggerated.
Why did my compressed GIF get bigger?
Some GIFs are already tightly optimized and re-encoding can't beat them. In that case the tool keeps your original and says so — a larger file is never reported as a success.
Can I compress several GIFs at once?
Yes — up to 10 files, each compressed separately, then download one by one or as a ZIP.
Are files uploaded?
No. Decoding, optimizing and encoding all happen in your browser — the page even works offline once loaded.
